Why Your Weight Fluctuates Daily (and How to Read the Real Trend)
You ate in a deficit all week and the scale is up 1.4 kg this morning. Nothing has gone wrong. Gaining a kilogram of actual fat takes roughly 7,700 surplus calories, which you did not eat overnight. Here is what really moved, how much each cause is worth, and how to read through the noise.
The four things that actually move overnight
1. Glycogen and the water bound to it
Carbohydrate is stored in muscle and liver as glycogen, and each gram of glycogen is stored with roughly 3 grams of water. Classic work measuring total body water alongside muscle glycogen showed the two move together.1 A high-carbohydrate day can therefore add several hundred grams of glycogen and over a kilogram of water within 24 hours. A low-carbohydrate day does the reverse, which is why the first week of any low-carb diet produces a dramatic and entirely non-fat drop.
2. Sodium and fluid shifts
A salty meal changes fluid distribution and short-term retention, typically worth a few hundred grams to about a kilogram for a day or two. The underlying physiology is less simple than the folklore suggests (controlled work found that high salt intake did not straightforwardly produce sustained fluid retention3), but the short-term day-to-day noise is real and familiar to anyone who weighs daily.
3. Gut contents
Food and fluid in transit weigh what they weigh. A large dinner, a high-fibre day, or a missed bowel movement can each account for 0.3 to 1 kg on the scale with no change whatsoever in body tissue.
4. Hormonal cycles
In menstruating women, fluid regulation shifts across the cycle under the influence of oestrogen and progesterone, producing predictable retention in the luteal phase.4 This commonly shows up as 1 to 2 kg that appears in the week before menstruation and disappears afterwards. If you are a woman tracking a diet, compare this month's week to the same week last month, not to last week.
What a kilogram means. To gain 1 kg of fat you need roughly 7,700 calories above maintenance. To gain 1 kg of water you need a salty meal and a decent carb load. When the scale jumps overnight, the arithmetic answers the question for you.
Weekends are not random either
Weight has a weekly rhythm. Analysis of daily weigh-in data found a consistent pattern of weight rising over the weekend and falling back during the week, driven by changes in eating and drinking behaviour.2 If you weigh yourself only on Mondays, you are systematically sampling the peak of your own weekly cycle.
How to weigh so the number means something
- Every morning, same conditions. After using the bathroom, before eating or drinking, minimal clothing, same scale, same spot on the floor.
- Record every day, judge none of them. Individual readings are data points, not verdicts. Do not react to one.
- Compare seven-day averages. Average Monday to Sunday, then compare with the previous week's figure. That is the number which responds to your calorie intake.
- Give it two weeks before changing anything. One flat week is noise. Two consecutive flat weekly averages, with intake logged honestly, is a signal.

When a stall is real
A genuine stall looks like this: three weeks of flat or rising weekly averages, waist measurement unchanged, intake logged accurately including weekends and drinks. If any of those conditions is missing, you probably do not have a stall: you have unlogged calories, too short a measurement window, or normal water noise.

The one-sentence version
Body fat changes slowly and predictably; body water changes fast and unpredictably. The scale measures both and cannot tell you which it just measured, so you average it over a week and let the arithmetic separate them.

How much can weight fluctuate in a day?
One to two kilograms is normal for most people, and more for larger people or after a high-carbohydrate, high-sodium meal. That range is water, glycogen and gut contents. Fat mass cannot change by anything close to that in 24 hours.
Why am I heavier the morning after a big meal?
Because the food and fluid are still in you, the carbohydrate has been stored as glycogen with roughly three times its weight in water, and sodium has shifted fluid distribution. It resolves over the next one to three days without you doing anything.
Should I weigh myself every day or once a week?
Every day, but only compare weekly averages. Daily data gives you enough readings for the average to be stable; a single weekly weigh-in is one noisy sample and can be off by a kilogram in either direction by chance.
How long should I wait before deciding my diet is not working?
Two to three weeks of weekly averages. Below two weeks the noise is larger than the signal you are trying to detect, especially at smaller deficits where the expected weekly change is only a few hundred grams.
